Epidemiology

Approximately 5% of people in the US and approximately 1% worldwide may have Barrett's oesophagus.[6] It affects around 2.3% to 15% of patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and around 1.2% to 5.6% of people without GORD.[6][7][8][9]

Around 0.2% to 0.5% of patients with Barrett's oesophagus may proceed to oesophageal adenocarcinoma.[6]

Older people, men, smokers, and white people seem to have a higher prevalence of Barrett's oesophagus than other groups.[6][8][10][11]
