Emerging treatments

Calcifediol

Calcifediol, a prohormone of the active form of vitamin D3, is available in some regions (either on prescription or as an over-the-counter supplement) to treat vitamin D deficiency. When taken orally, calcifediol rapidly increases circulating concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 in vitamin D-deficient adults. Calcifediol has been demonstrated to be as effective in raising serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in adults with obesity compared to normal weight adults and patients with malabsorption syndromes.[139][140] High-dose calcifediol is also used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease. Calcifediol is not currently approved in the US for the treatment of vitamin D deficiency, but may be licensed in other countries for this indication.
