Criteria

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology classification of allergic rhinitis criteria[3]

Intermittent: symptoms are present

  • <4 days a week or for <4 consecutive weeks a year

Persistent: symptoms are present

  • ≥4 days a week and for ≥4 consecutive weeks a year

Mild: none of the following items are present

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Impairment of daily activities, leisure, and/or sport

  • Impairment of school or work

  • Troublesome symptoms.

Moderate/severe: one or more of the following items are present

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Impairment of daily activities, leisure, and/or sport

  • Impairment of school or work

  • Troublesome symptoms.

A visual analogue scale (VAS) can also be used to determine the severity of symptoms in order to guide treatment.

  • Mild, intermittent symptoms (VAS <5/10)

  • Moderate/severe, intermittent symptoms (VAS ≥5/10)

  • Mild, persistent symptoms (VAS <5/10)

  • Moderate/severe, persistent symptoms (VAS ≥5/10).
