Prognosis is dependent upon underlying etiology and type of gastritis.
Erosive gastritis
Symptoms typically improve following discontinuation of or reduction in exposure to offending agent (e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/alcohol).[3]Glickman JN, Antonioli DA. Gastritis. Gastrointest Endosc Clin N Am. 2001 Oct;11(4):717-40.

Helicobacter pylori infection
Prognosis is good although cure rates in the community are considerably lower than those described in clinical trials.[4]Chey WD, Leontiadis GI, Howden CW, Moss SF. ACG clinical guideline: treatment of helicobacter pylori infection. Am J Gastroenterol. 2017 Feb;112(2):212-39.

An initial traditional triple therapy regimen may be inadequate and patients may require an alternative quadruple bismuth-based regimen.[4]Chey WD, Leontiadis GI, Howden CW, Moss SF. ACG clinical guideline: treatment of helicobacter pylori infection. Am J Gastroenterol. 2017 Feb;112(2):212-39.

Autoimmune gastritis
Prognosis is excellent for B₁₂ deficiency following replacement therapy with cyanocobalamin. There is a small increased risk for the development of gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric carcinoids.[89]Hsing AW, Hansson LE, McLaughlin JK, et al. Pernicious anemia and subsequent cancer: a population-based cohort study. Cancer. 1993 Feb 1;71(3):745-50.

Phlegmonous gastritis
The mortality rate for surgically treated patients was 20% (2/10) and for medically treated patients was 50% (13/26).[91]Kim GY, Ward J, Henessey B, et al. Phlegmonous gastritis: case report and review. Gastrointest Endosc. 2005 Jan;61(1):168-74.
