Prognosis is dependent upon underlying etiology and type of gastritis.

Erosive gastritis

Symptoms typically improve following discontinuation of or reduction in exposure to offending agent (e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/alcohol).[3][33]

Helicobacter pylori infection

Prognosis is good although cure rates in the community are considerably lower than those described in clinical trials.[4] An initial traditional triple therapy regimen may be inadequate and patients may require an alternative quadruple bismuth-based regimen.[4]

Autoimmune gastritis

Prognosis is excellent for B₁₂ deficiency following replacement therapy with cyanocobalamin. There is a small increased risk for the development of gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric carcinoids.[89][90]

Phlegmonous gastritis

The mortality rate for surgically treated patients was 20% (2/10) and for medically treated patients was 50% (13/26).[91]
