Prognosis is dependent upon underlying aetiology and type of gastritis.

Erosive gastritis

Symptoms typically improve following discontinuation of or reduction in exposure to offending agent (e.g., non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]/alcohol).[2][40]

Helicobacter pylori infection

Prognosis is good although cure rates in the community are considerably lower than those described in clinical trials.[3]

Autoimmune gastritis

Prognosis is excellent for B12 deficiency following replacement therapy with cyanocobalamin. There is a small increased risk for the development of gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric carcinoid.[96][97]

Phlegmonous gastritis

The mortality rate for surgically treated patients was 20% (2/10) and for medically treated patients was 50% (13/26).[98]
