Patient discussions

Reinforce good diapering hygiene practices with the caregiver.[13]

  • No matter which type of diaper is used, change diaper every 2 hours or at least inspect for soiling every 2 hours.

  • Change diapers even more frequently in newborns and children with diarrhea.

  • Eliminate irritants at each diaper change by cleansing diaper area with commercial cleansing wipes or water on cotton cloth.

  • Use products with minimal additives.

  • Avoid excess friction and detergents.

  • If child is prone to frequent diaper rash, empirically apply topical barrier containing zinc oxide, soft paraffin jelly, glycerin, or mineral oil.

  • Allow for diaper-free time whenever practical.

  • Avoid use of plastic underpants over diaper.
