Epidemiology
The majority of newborns display some skin breakdown in the nappy area by 1 week of age, with increasing severity by 3 weeks.[2] Nappy rash most commonly occurs in the first year of life, but can occur up to 2 years of age. Approximately half of all children will have rash at some time during their nappy-wearing years.[3] In one study, half of all participants aged 2-4 years had experienced at least one nappy rash, while 17.6% had a nappy rash in the past 6 weeks.[4] Another study noted that approximately one quarter of hospitalised children had some skin breakdown; the majority of cases were located on the buttocks, perineum, and occiput.[5] It is one of the most common dermatological conditions that prompts carers to seek medical care for their children at emergency medical facilities.[6]
