Epidemiology
In the Western world the incidence rate ranges from 1 to 24 cases per 100,000 person-years, with the highest incidence rates seen in Scandinavia and Northern Europe.[10] Prevalence is approximately 1 per 1000.
Geographically, UC is more common in the western and northern hemispheres, and has a low incidence in Asia and the Far East, although this has been reported to be increasing.[7][10][11] While the incidence has remained stable, the prevalence seems to have increased in the past few decades, in part due to advances in diagnosis and treatment. It is slightly more common in men than in women. Most patients are ages 20 to 40 years at diagnosis. Another peak occurs at age 60 years. UC is uncommon in children <10 years of age.[1][2][3]
