Primary prevention

Traumatic uveitis may be avoided through use of protective eye wear in athletic activities (e.g., racquetball or squash), scientific laboratory work, and industrial occupations. Any activity that includes the possibility of liquid or solid projectiles warrants protection.

To help prevent infectious uveitis:

  • Carefully wash hands after contact with sick people.

  • Ensure proper handling of food; pork, lamb, chicken, and other sources of meat may be contaminated with Toxoplasma gondii.

  • Use protective measures to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infection.

  • Use antibiotic drops as indicated following cataract surgery and other ophthalmic procedures.
