Prognosis

Prognosis depends on stage of disease and treatment; lymph node involvement is an important determinant of survival. Stomach cancer usually gets diagnosed at an advanced stage, and thus usually has a poor prognosis.[39] Five-year survival is 76.5% for people with localised cancer, 37.2% for people whose cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes, and 7.5% for people with distant metastases.[111]

Patients with locally advanced or metastatic stomach cancer have a high risk of developing peritoneal disease, which is associated with poor prognosis.[39] High microsatellite instability /mismatch repair deficiency gastric tumours have a better prognosis compared with microsatellite stable/mismatch repair proficient gastric tumours.[6][39]
