Screening
People with a family history of primary angle-closure glaucoma are at a higher risk of developing the condition. First degree relatives of patients diagnosed with angle-closure disease should undergo regular optometric review.[34][35][36]
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) makes the following recommendations regarding the frequency of ocular examinations for persons at higher risk for glaucoma, even in the absence of symptoms.[37]
Under age 40: every 2 to 5 years
Aged 40-54: every 1 to 3 years
Aged 55-64: every 1 to 2 years
Age 65 years or older: every 1 to 2 years
Eye examination is recommended if experiencing ocular symptoms, visual changes, or injury. Initiation and frequency of eye evaluations should be based on individual risk factors.
For asymptomatic patients who do not have risk factors for eye disease, the AAO makes the following recommendations for adult comprehensive medical eye examination.[37]
Under age 40: every 5 to 10 years
Aged 40-54: every 2 to 4 years
Aged 55 to 64: every 1 to 3 years
Age 65 or older: every 1 to 2 years
