Epidemiology

HL is an uncommon malignancy. In the UK, there were 2166 new cases of HL between 2017 and 2019.[5] It is estimated that 8720 new cases of HL and 1150 associated deaths will occur in the US in 2025.[6] The age-adjusted incidence rate in the US is approximately 2.5 per 100,000 people per year (based on data from 2018 to 2022).[6]

Incidence is slightly higher among men than women (2.8 vs. 2.2 per 100,000 people).[6] HL is more common among non-Hispanic white people (3.1 new cases per 100,000 men; 2.6 per 100,000 women) than other racial/ethnic groups.[6]

In the US, median age at diagnosis is 39 years.[6] Peak incidence occurs at ages 20-34 years.[6] Data indicate a bimodal distribution of age at diagnosis, with an initial peak at ages 15-35 years followed by a more modest peak among those >55 years.[5][6][7]

HL incidence rates vary considerably by geographic region, with the highest incidence rates observed in Southern Europe.[7]
