Epidemiology
Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) can be found in all populations, but is most common in people of Northern European ancestry.[14] The prevalence in this group is approximately 1 in 5000.[7][15]
Screening of blood donors suggests that mild forms may be more common (prevalence up to 1 in 800 women and 1 in 150 men).[16] These very mild forms are probably of no clinical significance. HS has only rarely been described in black people.[17] It occurs in people of either sex and can present at any age, partly determined by clinical severity.
