Patient discussions

Patients need to be encouraged to consume 2 to 3 times their previous caloric intake (hyperphagia). This can increase diarrhea, but is necessary to sustain adequate nutrition, promote maximal intestinal adaptation, and prevent complications of gallbladder and liver disease. When thirsty, oral rehydration solution is recommended instead of water, juice, or sports drinks; caffeinated beverages should be avoided. Patients need aggressive treatment of any underlying conditions such as Crohn disease to prevent worsening of their small bowel impairment.
