Criteria
Diagnosis criteria[1]
Bone marrow hypocellular, with no abnormal cells and no fibrosis.
At least two among the following:
Hemoglobin <10 g/dL
Platelet count <50 × 10³/microliter (<50 × 10⁹/L)
Absolute neutrophil count <1500/microliter (<1.5 × 10⁹/L).
Severity criteria[1][51][52]
Severe aplastic anemia (AA)
Bone marrow cellularity <25% or cellularity <50% with <30% residual hematopoietic cells
At least 2 among the following:
Absolute reticulocyte count <60 × 10³/microliter (60 x 10⁹/L) (using an automated analysis)
Platelet count <20 × 10³/microliter (<20 × 10⁹/L)
Absolute neutrophil count <500/microliter (<0.5 × 10⁹/L).
Very severe AA
Absolute neutrophil count <200/microliter (<0.2 × 10⁹/L)
AND fulfills the rest of the criteria for severe AA.
Non-severe AA (also referred to as moderate AA)
Patients who do not fulfil the criteria for severe or very severe AA.
