Criteria

Diagnosis criteria[1]

Bone marrow hypocellular, with no abnormal cells and no fibrosis.

At least two among the following:

  • Haemoglobin <100 g/L (<10 g/dL)

  • Platelet count <50 × 10⁹/L (<50 × 10³/microlitre)

  • Absolute neutrophil count <1.5 × 10⁹/L (<1500/microlitre).

Severity criteria[1][51][52]

Severe aplastic anaemia (AA)

  • Bone marrow cellularity <25% or cellularity <50% with <30% residual haematopoietic cells

  • At least 2 among the following:

    • Absolute reticulocyte count <60 x 10⁹/L (<60 × 10³/microlitre) (using an automated analysis)

    • Platelet count <20 × 10⁹/L (<20 × 10³/microlitre)

    • Absolute neutrophil count <0.5 × 10⁹/L (<500/microlitre).

Very severe AA

  • Absolute neutrophil count <0.2 × 10⁹/L (<200/microlitre)
