Criteria
Diagnosis criteria[1]
Bone marrow hypocellular, with no abnormal cells and no fibrosis.
At least two among the following:
Haemoglobin <100 g/L (<10 g/dL)
Platelet count <50 × 10⁹/L (<50 × 10³/microlitre)
Absolute neutrophil count <1.5 × 10⁹/L (<1500/microlitre).
Severity criteria[1][51][52]
Severe aplastic anaemia (AA)
Bone marrow cellularity <25% or cellularity <50% with <30% residual haematopoietic cells
At least 2 among the following:
Absolute reticulocyte count <60 x 10⁹/L (<60 × 10³/microlitre) (using an automated analysis)
Platelet count <20 × 10⁹/L (<20 × 10³/microlitre)
Absolute neutrophil count <0.5 × 10⁹/L (<500/microlitre).
Very severe AA
Absolute neutrophil count <0.2 × 10⁹/L (<200/microlitre)
AND fulfils the rest of the criteria for severe AA.
Non-severe AA (also referred to as moderate AA)
Patients who do not fulfil the criteria for severe or very severe AA.
