May be asymptomatic or present with nephrolithiasis or gout.

INVESTIGATIONS

Serum potassium, phosphate, and calcium levels are normal.

Isolated hyperkalemia

Patient may be taking potassium-sparing medication, systemic heparin, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Renal failure and frequent blood transfusions can contribute.[54]

Serum uric acid, phosphate, and calcium levels are normal.

Isolated hyperphosphatemia

History of dehydration and volume depletion, pulmonary embolism, bone metastases, or advanced renal failure.[54] Use of bisphosphonates, laxatives, and antacids may contribute.

Isolated hypocalcemia
