Patient discussions

Growth and nutrition are very important in the first year of life after hepatoportoenterostomy. At discharge from the hospital, children are placed on a high medium-chain triglyceride formula.[83] If the mother breastfeeds, the recommendation is to pump and fortify the breast milk. Additionally, all children receive supplemental vitamins A, D, E, and K.[82]

Families should be advised to contact their specialist for any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Fever over 37.8 °C

  • Stools that are black and tarry, red, or acutely paler than time of discharge

  • Irritability that cannot be consoled

  • Acute increase in abdominal girth

  • Vomiting blood.
