Screening
General
Most cases of infection are self-limited. Early detection of cases does not help to prevent chronic disease. As a consequence, screening is not indicated. Screening tools are available; however, they are not routinely used and have been found to be inaccurate in patients ages 65 years and over.[77]
Screening in blood donors
There have been no documented cases of infection associated with blood transfusion; however, the risk is present in viremic patients. It is likely that health questionnaires will detect potential donors if they are acutely ill; however, in the midst of an extensive outbreak, consideration should be taken to use nucleic acid detection as a screening method among donated units of blood.[26]
