Patient discussions

Most patients can care for themselves at home. Resting in a warm environment and avoiding humidity is reasonable. Mild exertion is acceptable, but patients should refrain from excessive use of their joints, as this may contribute to further inflammation. If compresses are to be used, cold compresses are a better option than warm ones.

Patients should maintain proper nutrition and adequate hydration to replenish their energy and keep up with the metabolic demands of an acute illness.

Patients can use acetaminophen for pain control. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can also be used with caution. Aspirin should always be avoided in children and adolescents owing to the risk of Reye syndrome.

Patients should seek medical attention if there is persistent fever beyond 5 to 7 days, severe pain that is not ameliorated with the use of acetaminophen, or if any evidence of bleeding, severe vomiting, or evidence of hypoperfusion (e.g., postural dizziness, excessive thirst, cold extremities, or decreased urinary output).[66]
