Primary prevention

No primary prevention strategies are formally recommended to prevent the development of achlorhydria.

Prevention and eradication of Helicobacter pylori through improved sanitation and effective antibiotic regimens might be expected to prevent atrophic gastritis and autoimmune gastritis, the most common causes of achlorhydria.

A decrease in surgery for peptic ulcer disease will decrease the incidence of atrophy by preserving the antrum, the primary source of the trophic hormone gastrin.
