Epidemiology
Anorectal abscesses are a common problem. There are an estimated 68,000 to 96,000 anorectal abscesses per year in the US.[12] In England, the estimated incidence of anorectal abscess is 20.2 per 100,000.[13] For patients with Crohn's disease, an anorectal abscess will develop in approximately one third of patients.[1] Anorectal abscesses are about 2 times more common in men than women, with most abscesses occurring in patients between 21 to 40 years of age.[14]
