Patellar tendon rupture occurs less frequently than quadriceps tendon rupture. In a study of 891 spontaneous tendon ruptures, 100% of the biopsy specimens exhibited pre-existing tendon degeneration. These changes probably predispose the tendon to rupture.[127]
Tendinopathy and tendon rupture can also be associated with fluoroquinolone use. Although the general healthy population treated with fluoroquinolones is at low risk, the likelihood increases with age >60 years, renal insufficiency, and corticosteroid use. The most common location is the Achilles' tendon, but other tendons, including the shoulder and hand, have been affected.[27][28]
