Monitoring
It is important to establish and maintain a physician-patient relationship, which may prove to be challenging for treatment providers.[59] In order to facilitate diagnosis and treatment, referral to a mental health professional with experience in treating patients with personality disorders will be necessary. Effective communication between treatment providers is essential in order to facilitate coordination of care and to prevent disruptions that result from poor communication. Ideally, patient follow-up visits are scheduled based on the management of comorbid conditions, either psychological or medical, and not based on personality disorder-related symptom exacerbation alone.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) recommends that patients receiving drug treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) receive a review and reconciliation of their drug treatments at least every 6 months to assess the effectiveness of treatment and identify drugs that warrant tapering or discontinuation.[14]
