The prevalence of asthma worldwide is variable. The global burden was reported to be 262 million people in 2019.[4]

In 2019/2020 in England, the prevalence (all ages) of asthma was 6.5%.[5] In the UK, 5.4 million people (all ages) have asthma.[6] Around 200,000 people (children and adults) had severe asthma.[7]

In the US, 20 million adults had asthma as of 2021.[8] Asthma prevalence and morbidity is lower in non-Hispanic white populations compared with other race and ethnic groups in the US; non-Hispanic black people are at the highest risk of death from asthma.[9][10]

Countries with the lowest prevalence in adults include China and Vietnam, whereas Australia and Sweden have the highest prevalence.[11]

Despite the improved understanding of pathophysiology and treatment methods, asthma continues to be undertreated.
