Patient counselling should begin in the hospital. Some beneficial interventions and harm reduction strategies that can potentially be initiated in the accident and emergency department and upon discharge include psychiatric evaluations, substance use disorder screening tools, buprenorphine initiation, naloxone distribution and training, and overdose prevention education.[87] It is also critical to work with patients to decrease the dose of opioid if this is an iatrogenic or unintentional overdose.[40][88][89]
