Mortality is significantly higher than for ischaemic stroke, in the range of 35% to 40%.[9]Tsao CW, Aday AW, Almarzooq ZI, et al. Heart disease and stroke statistics-2023 update: a report from the American Heart Association. Circulation. 2023 Feb 21;147(8):e93-621.

Only 20% to 30% of all patients are well enough to live independently by 3 to 6 months. Haemorrhage volume is the strongest predictor of outcome. Advanced age, impaired consciousness at presentation, and rupture of the haematoma into the ventricular system are also associated with worse outcomes.[23]Greenberg SM, Ziai WC, Cordonnier C, et al. 2022 Guideline for the management of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: a guideline from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Stroke. 2022 Jul;53(7):e282-361.
