Pregnant women
Women are screened at the beginning of the pregnancy for asymptomatic bacteriuria and treated with antibiotics if present to prevent the later development of pyelonephritis.[1]European Association of Urology. Guidelines on urological infections. 2023 [internet publication].

Low-quality evidence suggests that treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria modestly reduces the incidence of pyelonephritis and the number of low-birth-weight infants.[22]Moore A, Doull M, Grad R, et al. Pyelonephritis in pregnancy can lead to preterm labour or loss of pregnancy.[40]Henderson JT, Webber EM, Bean SI. Screening for asymptomatic bacteriuria in adults: updated evidence report and systematic review for the US Preventive Services Task Force. JAMA. 2019 Sep 24;322(12):1195-1205.
