Venezuelan haemorrhagic fever case definition

There are no current internationally accepted criteria or case definitions; however, a case definition has been proposed for Venezuelan haemorrhagic fever, which could be applied to all 5 diseases.[6] The proposed definition is as follows:

Suspect/probable case

  • Patient living in or in recent contact with rural areas within the endemic zone

  • Acute febrile illness characterised by most or all of: weakness, headache, myalgia, sore throat, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, haemorrhagic manifestations, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.

Confirmed case

  • Above symptomatology

  • Laboratory confirmation of disease (e.g., via reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction or serology).
