Prognosis

All people with functional vestibular systems have some degree of susceptibility to motion sickness.[9] Screening to exclude unacceptably high susceptibility that would impair work performance is necessary for occupations and military activities that involve vehicles. However, some people, while highly susceptible to motion sickness on initial exposure, with repeated exposure to the motion environment habituate and can work effectively without symptoms.

Motion sickness is a lifelong individual physiological/psychological trait. It is not an illness or disease and may be viewed as the body's own protection against unusual, potentially threatening environments. It occurs naturally in most individuals during continued or repeated exposure to unusual motion. Individual level of susceptibility to motion sickness may be expected to persist throughout life. In the short term, disorders that lower natural thresholds for developing nausea may enhance susceptibility.

Habituation treatment for individual circumstances provoking motion sickness must be repeated frequently to retain efficacy.[80]
