Monitoring
In patients with pulmonary or disseminated nocardiosis, a head CT or MRI must be performed to rule out brain involvement. When brain abscesses are diagnosed, serial follow-up scans must be performed to evaluate the treatment response.[54] For patients undergoing sulfonamide and amikacin treatment, renal function must be monitored at least weekly. Therapeutic drug monitoring and regular audiology examinations are also recommended with prolonged aminoglycoside use. Hematology laboratory tests must be performed weekly to exclude myelosuppression during treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole or linezolid.[68]
