Emerging treatments

Isavuconazonium

Isavuconazonium (a prodrug of isavuconazole), an extended-spectrum triazole antifungal, has shown activity against Histoplasma capsulatum, although there are insufficient data available to recommend its routine use in the treatment of histoplasmosis.[63] It may be considered in certain patients when other azole antifungals cannot be used.[25]

Corticosteroids

Anecdotal reports suggest that the addition of methylprednisolone during the first 2 weeks of antifungal therapy in patients with severe acute pulmonary histoplasmosis who develop respiratory complications, including hypoxemia or significant respiratory distress, may lead to clinical improvement, although clinical trials are lacking.[1][64]
