Patient discussions

Patients should be advised to avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and cigarette smoking. If they have documented Helicobacter pylori infection, they should be reminded that they need to complete the course of therapy even if symptoms resolve. Patients should seek medical attention if they develop blood in stools, black tarry stools, vomiting, or abdominal pain.
