Primary prevention
Circumcision is preventive for the development of paraphimosis. In addition, the uncircumcised male or his caregivers should be advised that, once the foreskin is retracted, it should be returned to its prior position covering the glans penis. Forcible retraction of a phimotic foreskin should be avoided. Compressive rings, etc., should be avoided.
Secondary prevention
Use of sexual or healthcare practices that leave the foreskin retracted should be avoided. Patients who have had paraphimosis secondary to body piercing should be instructed not to reinstate the piercing. Those who have had the condition secondary to an allergic reaction should avoid the allergen.
