Monitoring

Monitoring patients with factitious disorder is difficult because of deception and reluctance to admit factitious behavior. Without an integrated system of medical records, patients who go from one facility to another are very difficult to detect. For the few patients who are willing to have treatment after factitious disorder is discovered, case reports and case series suggest that psychotherapy may be effective to prevent further incidents, although systematic studies are lacking to suggest that one approach to psychotherapy is more effective than another.[25] Specialists should have open communication about the patient in order to provide the best care. Comorbid psychiatric conditions should be monitored and treated.
