Prognosis

Prognosis

In younger patients with AUB due to anovulation during the first few years following menarche, the prognosis is usually excellent once regular ovulatory menstrual cycles are attained. In perimenopausal women, AUB also has an excellent prognosis; the problem disappears upon reaching the menopause.

If the specific cause of AUB is not addressed, it often has a significant impact on the quality of life for women, in addition to a significant time and economic burden for the healthcare system.

Endometrial sampling is key in women with risk factors for endometrial hyperplasia and cancer, and an early diagnosis is usually associated with a good prognosis.

The Nurses' Health Study II, which involved longitudinal follow up of 116,429 participants from 1989 to 2017, suggests that hysterectomy, alone or in combination with oophorectomy, as well as tubal ligation, may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary revascularization.[90]
