Screening

Examination of all male neonates at birth should include a testicular exam to rule out cryptorchidism and any other abnormalities of the genitalia, such as the rare entity of extravaginal torsion.

If cryptorchidism is present, the infant is at greater risk of torsion. Referral to an appropriate surgical specialist should be made if testicular descent has not occurred by 6 months (corrected for gestational age).
