Sometimes, ear infections may require the use of an antibiotic. A decision to provide antibiotics immediately or delayed should be discussed with the parents.[19] Parents should administer the antibiotics as prescribed to avoid recurrence of the ear infection with resistant bacteria.[59]
If symptoms do not improve within 2 to 3 days of diagnosis, then the patient should follow up with the doctor.
An ear infection does not require any special restrictions from a child's normal daily activities. A child may return to day care or school once the fever is gone and the child is feeling better. If the ear drum has ruptured, the child should avoid swimming. Air travel during an ear infection may worsen the pain.
