Epidemiology
Prostatitis is often regarded as a disease of older men, but is more common in men age <50 years.[8][9] Acute prostatitis is estimated to represent up to 10% of prostatitis diagnoses.[10][11] The prevalence of prostatitis-like symptoms varies widely in different parts of the world, but data is limited by differences in the measures and criteria used.[8] One US-based study reported an overall prevalence of prostatitis (combined acute and chronic) of 2.7%.[12]
