Monitoring

Asthma should continue to be monitored to ensure control with appropriate therapies and nonwork environmental control measures in: patients with sensitizer-induced occupational asthma (OA; following diagnosis and removal from relevant sensitizer exposure); and, patients with irritant-induced OA.[23][38] Patients who move to a new work area or new job should also be closely monitored to ensure there is no further work component.

As with patients who have nonoccupational asthma, work factors may exacerbate asthma (e.g., dusts, smoke, fumes, cold air, and exertion). Careful monitoring may include serial peak flow readings and a diary of exposures, symptoms, and treatment needs. If other exposures worsen asthma, they may need to be modified and drugs may need to be adjusted for asthma control.
