Patient discussions
Encourage lifestyle modifications alongside testosterone therapy, including maintaining a healthy weight with diet and exercise, and improving sleep quality.
Counsel patients on the overall health benefits of lifestyle modifications, as well as the potential improvements in testosterone levels, especially for patients with obesity, metabolic syndrome, or type 2 diabetes.[1]
Inform patients that all formulations of testosterone therapy can cause polycythemia, gynecomastia, oily skin, and acne.
Advise that transdermal testosterone gel should be applied according to the instructions for the specific formulation, usually on the shoulder, upper arm, or abdomen.
Inform patients that they should not wear a shirt for at least 10 minutes after application of transdermal gel. And that they should ensure that the application site is dry before putting on a shirt.
Advise patients against sexual activity, showering, and swimming for 4 hours after gel application.
