Monitoring

Primary care providers are essential in the long-term management of cardiovascular risk factors and should be notified when a patient presents to the emergency department with transient ischemic attack (TIA).[13] Given the subsequent risk for recurrent stroke after TIA, rapid follow-up with both a neurologist and primary care physician is warranted, ideally within 48 hours.[13]

Follow-up for TIA hinges on continued attention to risk factor modification, including blood pressure control and smoking cessation.[21][133]

In patients with TIA and hyperlipidemia, patients' adherence to changes in lifestyle and the effects of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-lowering medication should be assessed by measurement of fasting lipids and appropriate safety indicators 4-12 weeks after statin initiation or 4-12 weeks after any adjustment in dose, and every 3-12 months thereafter, based on individual need.[21]
