Monitoring
All patients require monitoring for long-term neurologic sequelae. Assessment of educational capabilities should also be undertaken, and communication between the child's teacher and primary care physician maintained for at least 2 years or until the child has reached 12 years of age. Some patients require special educational and medical support.
If seizures have occurred during the acute illness, outpatient anticonvulsants will usually be continued until patients are seizure-free; a trial of medications with the usual precautions can then be considered.
It is rarely necessary to continue monitoring liver, renal, or cardiac function.
